Scott G. Nelson writes emotionally honest stories about love, identity, belonging, and the moments that change the course of a life. His debut novel, The Man I Wasn’t Supposed to Love, explores the complicated space between the people we love, the choices we make, and the stories we carry with us.
Sixteen-year-old Reed Carver thought he knew who he was and where he belonged—until moving in with Nicolas and Stacy changes the course of his life.
What begins as safety and connection becomes something far more complicated as Reed discovers how closely love, desire, and pain can exist beside one another.
The Man I Wasn’t Supposed to Love is an emotional coming-of-age novel about first love, identity, family, and the people who leave their mark long after they’re gone.

The Man I Wasn’t Supposed to Love began with memories I had carried quietly for years. Some were painful. Some were complicated. And some never fit neatly into the way I had learned to describe the past.
Writing gave me a way to return to those memories differently. Over time, pieces of lived experience became fiction, and Reed Carver became a way to explore first love, desire, secrecy, family, and what happens when love and hurt exist in the same memory.
I started putting pieces of this story on paper years ago. Finishing it at 51 made me realize I had also written something for the younger version of myself—the one who didn't yet understand everything that was happening around him but kept going anyway.
This novel is where that story begins.

The Man I Wasn’t Supposed to Love is only the beginning.
Reed Carver has built a life beyond Silvermere and the choices that shaped his youth. But some parts of the past never disappear completely.
Years later, a familiar face returns in the most unexpected way—and with two simple words:
“Hello, stranger.”
Reed Carver’s story continues in Book Two.
